Trading the Keystone State for the Lone Star State: A Girls’ RV Month in Lockhart
When my two best friends and I decided to pack up the RV and trade the rolling hills of Pennsylvania for the Texas Hill Country this summer, we didn’t know exactly what to expect. We were looking for the perfect home base for a month-long girls’ getaway, and Lockhart quickly proved it was the absolute best spot to park our rig…one of the best RV locations in Texas.
The Scent of Oak Wood and Smoked Brisket
You know you’ve arrived in the Barbecue Capital of Texas when the air itself smells like a dinner bell. Swapping our usual Pennsylvania diners for slow-smoked meats, our first week was a masterclass in Texas BBQ.
We made it our mission to sample the local legends, bouncing between the iconic smokehouses.
There is something undeniably magical about sitting at long communal tables, passing around butcher paper piled high with brisket and jalapeño sausage, and trying not to get barbecue sauce all over our favorite summer outfits.
It was an initiation by fire and flavor.
Easy Days on the Historic Square
While many of our days were packed with road trips, our favorite moments were often the “easy days” spent right in downtown Lockhart.
- The Courthouse: We loved strolling around the stunning Caldwell County Courthouse. Standing proudly in the center of town, it looks like something straight out of a classic movie.
- Window Shopping & Drinks: The historic square is lined with charming storefronts and antique shops. These walks made for perfect, lazy afternoons when the Texas summer sun demanded a slower pace, usually ending with the three of us grabbing a cold drink and laughing until our sides hurt.
City Lights and River Sights
Lockhart’s location ended up being the ultimate cheat code for our RV trip. Because we were positioned right in the middle of everything, taking day trips was incredibly easy.
When we craved big-city energy, Austin was just a short, scenic drive north. We spent a full day touring the majestic Capitol building, spotting turtles while walking the trails at Lady Bird Lake, and exploring the vibrant local scene.
When it was time for some retail therapy, we took a quick trip over to San Marcos.
Between hunting for fantastic deals at the massive premium outlets and eventually cooling off in the crystal-clear San Marcos River, it was a day that kept all three of us completely thrilled.
A Southbound Drive to San Antonio
No extended stay in Central Texas is complete without heading south. We hopped in the truck early one morning and made the drive out to San Antonio.
- The History: We spent the morning taking in the history and the sheer scale of the Alamo.
- The Culture: We spent the evening wandering the winding paths of the River Walk, sharing a massive plate of Tex-Mex and a pitcher of margaritas under the colorful patio umbrellas as the riverboats glided by below us.
Until Next Time
As we finally packed up the RV at the end of the month, we were already plotting our return.
Lockhart gave us the perfect balance: the quiet charm of a small Texas town, the mouth-watering allure of world-class BBQ, and unparalleled access to the best cities in the state.
It wasn’t just a summer getaway; it was a month of memories with my best friends that we’ll be talking about all the way back to PA.
